Add links. Add freshness to your content. Utilize schema. Establish yourself as an authority. Be referenced somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current SEO\/GEO guide check lists vary only in how their items are worded. However, it appears that the actual lists themselves are becoming much alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This does not mean that there is no merit to each item being listed. Rather, the value lies in what level of evidence supports each tactic. That means evidence quality becomes more valuable than just another checklist.<\/p>\n\n\n    <div class=\"quote-box\">\r\n        <div><p>Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content, technical infrastructure, and brand signals so AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews can cite, quote, or recommend a source. Strong GEO builds on solid SEO rather than replacing it, while treating unproven tactics with the same scrutiny as proven ones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Generative Engine Optimization Actually Is<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative engine optimization (GEO) refers to optimization for visibility in answers produced by generative systems. This can manifest in different ways; e.g., your webpage could appear as a linked citation, your brand name could be cited in a way that does not include a hyperlink, the content of your site could impact the content of the answer provided by the AI system, or your business could appear as a recommendation from an AI system when responding to a generic question about a specific category. The initial research paper on GEO originally defined the term as an attempt to improve content&#8217;s visibility in the form of generative-engine answers, and reported increases in visibility as high as 40% within their test group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last part is important. A critical review of 45 GEO related studies published in 2026 states that the base study was testing existing content within a fixed source context and demonstrated that you can rewrite what has been retrieved from other sources to have an effect upon how those materials are utilized, however, this does not show that those same manipulations would result in new URLs being discovered organically through multiple live AI search engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is the useful working frame for <a href=\"https:\/\/crowdo.net\/blog\/llm-citation-friendly-seo\">making your brand citation-friendly for AI<\/a>: optimize the entire path from discovery to retrieval to citation, instead of treating one formatting trick as a ranking factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>GEO vs. SEO vs. AEO: the working distinctions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SEO improves your website so it can crawl (be found), index (have its content stored), rank (show up high) and click (get opened) in a normal search. AEO or Answer Engine Optimization usually refers to how easy the information is to bring up as an exact answer. GEO or Geographic Optimization refers to being visible in answers generated by machines, including citations, brands mentioned, recommendations, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no standards for these terms. For example, Adobe considers all optimizations around large language model optimizations, GEO, AEO and AI optimizations to be close together. In academia GEO has been used in a very narrow sense. Use these classifications as working definitions instead of trying to use them as distinct sciences that have universally accepted boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The areas of overlap are big. A page that cannot be accessed through technical means is a weak SEO asset and a weak GEO asset. The same goes for a confusing paragraph. It will also confuse the search engines and retrieval systems. When there is positive third party coverage of a trusted brand then they have advantages in both areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How generative engines retrieve, rank, and synthesize an answer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The useful mental model is a pipeline, not a single ranking algorithm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning with <strong>retrieval <\/strong>&#8211; a system determines if web information is needed and identifies candidate documents or passages.<br>Google indicates that &#8220;AI Overviews&#8221; and &#8220;AI Mode,&#8221; can utilize &#8220;query fan-out.&#8221; This means that instead of sending back just one search for a specific term or phrase, they are able to send back multiple, connected searches from various subtopics and other databases to provide more comprehensive answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next comes <strong>selection &amp; context allocation<\/strong> &#8211; material that has been retriever is filtered\/ reranked, and placed into the model&#8217;s available context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the model <strong>synthesizes <\/strong>an answer (which may include citations &amp; supporting links). The 2026 critical survey describes GEO as a multistage process spanning crawling, indexing, retrieval, reranking, citation, prominence, factual use, and user behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, &#8220;why isn&#8217;t ChatGPT citing me because I rank #1?&#8221; Is the wrong question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Most GEO Advice Online Can&#8217;t Be Trusted at Face Value<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent example is the repeated claim (repeated across dozens of 2026 GEO pages) that Perplexity delivers a <strong>fresh content citation rate of 82%,<\/strong> <strong>when that content was updated in the last 30 days<\/strong>.<br>Many of the 2026 GEO pages which cite this number attribute it to either Qwairy or Whitehat SEO and some merely report the numbers without providing the ability for inspection into the original methodologies. One GEO page cites the number from a Qwairy analysis of 118,000 responses. Another cites Whitehat SEO&#8217;s research. That does not mean the number cannot be true. It means you would need to have access to the original data set and methodology before being able to confidently recommend the use of the number to your clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For comparison, Ahrefs published its own direct freshness study based upon analyzing approximately 17 million URL cited URLs. The study found that the URLs cited by <strong>ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot are approximately 25.7% fresher by publication date than those cited URLs in Google&#8217;s Organic search results<\/strong>. Ahrefs also clearly states in the study that &#8220;freshness&#8221; is just one of many factors affecting discoverability and further notes that the Google AI Overviews behave much like typical Google Search Results rather than ChatGPT. This is how we determine credibility of GEO claims. When evaluating a GEO claim ask: Who produced the data? How many pages or prompts were tested? Was the test measuring retrieval or actual citation? Were there controls used in the testing? Were other search engines compared? Has the finding been replicated independently?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, a 2026 academic review concluded that while there has been some progress toward establishing a common standard for assessing evidence; however, heterogeneity continues to exist regarding platforms behaviors and none of the examined tactics demonstrate long term causal effects on organic discovery or subsequent business behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Does GEO Replace SEO, or Build on It?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SEO is built upon with GEO. The most solid evidence comes directly from the engines themselves.<br>Google states that while there will be some difference in how the foundation of the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode; to qualify as an associated link, the page must have been indexed, and eligible to show up in the Google search results with a snippet. Google also stated that there were no added technical qualifications needed to include your page in their new features using AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The observed citation data support this view of Google. A July 2025 Ahrefs study covering 1.9 Million AI Overview citations found that <strong>76.10 percent of the cited pages had a Google rank in their Top Ten<\/strong>. This supports a strong organic-foundation, but does not prove that having a Top-Ten ranking will cause you to receive a citation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of Google, the relationship is much looser. An Ahrefs analysis has shown that the citation sets employed by both ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity (all four) intersect significantly less with what appears on the first page of Google then AI Overviews do. Therefore, obtaining high placement through conventional rankings may increase your chances of being discovered without controlling the ultimate set of sources each AI engine uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why <a href=\"https:\/\/crowdo.net\/blog\/ai-search-revolution-website-still-matters\">AI search has changed how buyers find information, but your website still matters<\/a>. Your site will remain the crawlable, indexable, canonical source of knowledge for your products, research, and conversion paths. GEO is an extension of the optimization scope to include more than just the SERP, while at the same time not eliminating the necessity for having a properly built website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore the logical progression is as follows: First get the indexing correct then focus on the technical aspects of SEO, followed by establishing a proper information architecture, create high-quality content, build authority. Once you have established this foundation correctly, you can start optimizing how well that foundation holds up against both crawling and being synthesized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What&#8217;s Actually Proven vs. Still Contested<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best method of determining how important it will be to focus on Generative Engine Optimization tasks is to evaluate them based on their &#8220;evidence tier.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>High-confidence evidence<\/strong> refers to official platform documentation or findings that have been replicated using a significant number of data sets. <strong>Moderate-confidence evidence<\/strong> can include large observational correlation studies that are strategic, but do not provide proof of cause-and-effect. <strong>Contested evidence<\/strong> would represent techniques with credible testing results that show conflicting direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Claim<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Evidence status<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Practical interpretation<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Solid SEO and crawlability remain foundational<\/td><td><strong>High confidence<\/strong>, especially for Google<\/td><td>Google requires pages to be indexed and snippet-eligible for AI Overview and AI Mode supporting links.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>AI assistants show a recency bias<\/td><td><strong>Moderate-to-high observational evidence<\/strong><\/td><td>Ahrefs&#8217; roughly 17-million-citation study found AI-assistant citations were 25.7% fresher by publication age than organic results overall, but the effect varied sharply by platform.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Off-site brand mentions matter<\/td><td><strong>Strong correlation, not demonstrated causation<\/strong><\/td><td>In Ahrefs&#8217; 75,000-brand AI Overview analysis, branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with visibility versus 0.218 for backlinks.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Schema directly raises AI citation rates<\/td><td><strong>Contested<\/strong><\/td><td>Google says no special schema is required; a large Ahrefs study found little or no uplift, while a smaller agency A\/B test reported a substantial ChatGPT effect.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Schema needs separate discussion since this is where confident GEO advice is best supported by evidence.<br>Google explicitly states that <strong>no additional Schema.org structure data is required<\/strong> when using AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google also recommends ensuring that any structured data used accurately represents all visible content on the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahrefs did further testing in a more direct manner. Ahrefs tested <strong>1,885 pages that included JSON-LD schem<\/strong>a, compared them to <strong>4,000 control page<\/strong>s and calculated an estimate of the relative citation increase. According to their analysis, t<strong>he citation increases were +2.4 percent for AI Mode, +2.2 percent for ChatGPT (both values are statistically indistinguishable from zero) <\/strong>and there was a <strong>-4.6 percent relative decrease in citations<\/strong> for the AI Overviews group within the analysis that used the same schema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, according to Ahrefs, there was little-to-no statistical significance related to citation increases due to the inclusion of schema in their test. There is however some opposing evidence that is limited in scope. In 2026, a company called AiBoost conducted tests of two nearly identical web pages on a single UK domain. In terms of the number of times ChatGPT &#8220;browsed&#8221; each page, <strong>across 30 total prompts and 270 total prompt-runs<\/strong>, the schema version was referenced <strong>73 percent of the time versus 31 percent<\/strong> of the time for the non-schema version. Thus, there is a reported ratio of 2.35:1 based upon the number of times each version was browsed by ChatGPT. However, as noted by the authors of the report, there are several limitations to the study including only having tested on a single domain, having had access to a relatively small prompt-set, and having only tested ChatGPT&#8217;s &#8220;browse&#8221; functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The GEO Best Practices Worth Prioritizing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While many seo tactics related to generative engine optimization may be based on speculation, there are a number of other &#8220;best practices&#8221; which deserve most of the focus, once speculative methods have been ruled out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Build content around specific, sourced statistics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for a generative system to rely upon the claims made, these claims must be capable of being grounded. &#8220;ai search is expanding rapidly,&#8221; is a very vague phrase. &#8220;Ahrefs examined approximately 17 million citations and determined that ai assistant references were 25.7 percent fresher than organic search results, &#8221; is specific, citeable and has data to support the assertion.<br>The 2018 GEO research study used statistical studies, reference citations and quotes in its tests and concluded that a well-designed optimization plan had the potential to create increased visibility of up to forty percent over their test. The authors further stated that they added a significant qualification to their findings; namely, the prior existence of content in search results would potentially affect the citation behavior of users and thus the ability to achieve organic search rankings. In addition, they pointed out that including several statistics did not ensure inclusion in search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, if you want to add credibility to your content, follow this basic operating procedure: first use primary sources where possible. Next, provide attribution for each source within your content and include the date of the study when the age of the content is material to your assertions. Finally, eliminate all statistical references that have no identifiable origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Add named expert quotes and inline citations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The naming of a source allows the reader of the content and the search engine to have something tangible to analyze. &#8220;Experts agree that creating organized content is helpful&#8221; is very general. A quotation or paraphrasing of an expert providing attribution to them provides an accountable statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing external sources similarly applies. Include links in your content directly to the referenced study, documentation, data set or original statement and do not reference any articles citing it. The 2026 critical survey of the GEO research included two main caveats regarding its findings. one was that the metrics and standard of evidence used varied widely throughout the study. Second, due to the variation in the quality and types of data, source tracing became part of the optimization process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This does not mean that you should fabricate &#8220;expert commentary.&#8221; Quotes from credible Experts are valuable since their identity and context can be evaluated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Structure content for extraction, not elegance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Search engines often treat individual sections of content separately from treating a single page as a single entity. Therefore, it is necessary that each significant section of content makes sense individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put your answer first. Use headings that describe what is being asked of them. Provide a definition immediately after your heading that asks for one. Place your evidence alongside the claim it supports. Utilize tables when the user&#8217;s task is to compare. Do not make the reader traverse five paragraphs of context before reaching the information promised by the heading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As documented by google, ai-mode and ai-overviews will cause a query to expand into multiple sub-questions and allow for retrieving additional supportive pages across those sub-questions. Similarly, the 2026 GEO survey identified topical relevance and position within available context as two of the more replicable influences observed across the literature regarding how users process search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having good extraction structure does not mean writing poor human content. Rather than writing for both parsers and people, you are reducing unnecessary ambiguity for both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Keep content fresh on a real cadence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>While Freshness is important enough to prioritize, &#8220;update every article every thirty days&#8221; is not a proven universal rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ahrefs 17-million citation study indicated that URLs cited by major ai assistants were 25.7 percent fresher by publication date than organic google search results on average. Chatgpt had the greatest recency difference in this dataset and Google AI Overviews was much closer to traditional serp behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, an effective cadence must be based upon how quickly the subject changes. Update product comparisons when products change. Replace outdated research when newer data significantly alters your conclusion. Review annual guides annually or when important search engines change their documentation. Always have date modified accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Updating the date without meaningfully changing the page gives you only a cosmetic Freshness signal, not better source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Earn unlinked brand mentions across the open web<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Branded Web Mentions are one of the most powerful observational indicators presently available.<br>Ahref&#8217;s research of 75,000 brands has shown that Branded Web Mentions have a .64 (rounded) correlation to AI Overview Visibility vs. Total Backlinks which were .22. Ahrefs also conducted further research on cross platform studies of 75,000 brands which showed Branded Web Mentions continued to show a strong correlation to AI Visibility. However, this study indicated that YouTube Mentions showed the largest correlation (.74 rounded). Ahrefs has been very clear that these findings are merely correlations; and therefore no matter how many mentions are earned, there is still no evidence that earning a mention will lead to an AI Recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a strategic perspective, the implications go far beyond traditional Link Building. Earn authentic discussions about your Brand from Industry Publications, Comparison Pages, Customer Communities, Podcast Transcripts\/Video &amp; Reviews, Videos and Forums related to your product or service. What surrounds the mention matters; a single Brand being consistently mentioned around a particular use case creates a better entity-topic association within Retrieval Systems than a large number of Homepage Links. Community Platforms are a component of the Off-Page Layer; however, treat them as Communities and NOT Citation Farms. In addition to checking CDN settings, WAF rules, authentication, accidentally blocking with noindex, enabling JavaScript rendering, how you use canonicalization (to prevent duplicate pages from being crawled), and whether or not the important information is available as text (not an image) so it can be crawled by a crawler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Measure Whether GEO Is Working<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t convert GEO metrics down to &#8220;did ChatGPT cite me this week?&#8221;<br>Begin with ai-referenced traffic. Create a channel\/exploration in ga4 using ChatGPT.com, chat.OpenAI.com (legacy), Perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, and Copilot.microsoft.com. OpenAI has started adding utm_source=ChatGPT.com to ChatGPT searches &#8211; making those searches much easier to separate out. Some ai-generating visits will have lost referrer information and may come in as direct traffic &#8211; so use sessions from referred sites as an absolute floor on referred traffic counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Measure the share of voice. Use a consistent list of commercially relevant prompts and measure how many times you and competitors appear in responses on ChatGPT, Perplexity, gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Instead of considering each response as a rank position, run multiple iterations of each prompt. The literature documents significant variations between runs and little overlap in sources between engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Distinguish between three results: mention, linking citation, visit. As stated above, they are not equal. For example, ahref&#8217;s own brand analysis noted that ai systems frequently mentions ahref without including a link back to ahref\u2019s domain &#8211; with significant differences among platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch branded query demand &amp; downstream behavior.
